Meet Leo Frenkel, one of our Level III Controls Engineers based in our Golden, CO office. After graduation from Colorado School Mines, Leo joined LSI and quickly became a crucial engineer on our team. We’re so proud of his contributions, and it’s an honor to spotlight him this month! How long have you been with LSI?
Six years.
What is your role at LSI?
I’m a Level 3 Controls Engineer.
Where did you go to college?
I graduated from Colorado School of Mines with a Bachelors in Engineering with Electrical and Mechanical Specialty.
What industries have you been involved in?
When I started with LSI, my focus was on the food and beverage industry, specifically our brewing clients. However, I’ve also worked in the mining, biosciences/pharmaceuticals, and material handling industries over the last six years.
What is your area of expertise?
Hardware and software design for projects that use Rockwell Automation products.
What platforms are you familiar with?
Rockwell Automation, DeltaV, and Foxboro.
What has been your favorite project at LSI?
My favorite project was a brewing client’s wort transfer process that we designed in DeltaV. It was my first programming project with DeltaV, and being part of the team was memorable for me.
What is your proudest moment at LSI?
Every time a project is complete. Seeing something run and operate as intended is always an excellent feeling.
What sets LSI apart as an employer?
It’s our people. I get to work with some of the most intelligent people I know, who are willing to share their knowledge and help others grow. Our wide range of expertise across multiple industries provides many growth opportunities for our engineers.
What sets LSI apart as a system integrator?
I’ll go back to the previous answer – it’s our people. Everyone is willing to put in the extra effort, so the project is successful. There’s an enthusiasm for our client’s projects vs. a “that’s not my job” attitude.
What are three ways or words that you would use to describe LSI?
Accountable, honest, and devoted.
What is one thing that clients may not know about LSI that you would like to share?
LSI really cares about its client’s success, and we strive to form meaningful partnerships with them.
Long-term client relationships are a hallmark of LSI. Why is that?
We ensure that the client is happy. We also stay very close to the client. So much so that many are considered friends.
How has LSI helped you in your career development?
The exposure to many clients and industries has helped me grow as a controls engineer.
What advice do you have for prospective LSI candidates?
Don’t limit yourself – before you join a large corporation where your exposure to multiple industries and technologies is limited, consider joining LSI. It’s a great place to start or continue your career because of all the learning opportunities that only a systems integrator can provide.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I like the outdoors, mountain biking and skiing.

I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and moved to the USA when I was three years old. My family speaks fluent Russian.
